Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the long term clinicoradiological results of a total hip replacement using the double tapered cementless Mallory-Head system.
Method: The study comprised of 47 patients that underwent 50 hip operations using the double tapered cementless Mallory-Head system. They were examined, clinicoradiologically, and followed up for a minimum of 7 years after the primary cementless total hip arthroplasty.
Result: The Harris hip scores for the 50 hips increased from 58 to 94 points at 2 years after the procedure, and to 91 at the final examination. Thigh pain was noticed in 5 cases. There were 42 cases (84%) of spot weld formation, 5 (10%) of stress shielding, 2 (4%) of cortical hypertrophy, 3 (6%) of pedestal formation and 1 (2%) of femoral radiolucency. There were also 4 cases (8%) of femoral osteolysis, of which three underwent a revisional operation.
Conclusion: The clinical and radiological evaluations of the total hip replacements, using the double tapered cementless Mallory-Head system 7 years postoperatively showed good results, but for longer period usage, further evaluations will be required.
